What is Disease X?
To clearly understand the concept of Disease X, we need to go back to the first three months of COVID-19 pandemic. A virus that was detected in China and soon spread like wildfire across the globe in a short time. Initially, a lot of health practitioners perceived it as any other flu with cold, cough, and fever being its common symptoms but little did they know how it would create havoc in people’s life. It is also feared that Disease X could have a similar impact as the devastating Spanish Flu of 1918-1920. It is estimated that Disease X could potentially result in up to 50 million fatalities. It is worth mentioning that a WHO tool determines which diseases pose the greatest public health risk due to their epidemic potential and/or the absence of insufficient countermeasures. The diseases that are presently under the lens include COVID-19, and Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever. Ebola and Marburg virus diseases, Lassa fever, MERS-CoV and Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS), Nipah and Henipaviral Diseases Rift Valley Fever, Zika, and Disease X. These diseases most likely can be the cause of the next epidemic. Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) was established in 2017 and classified Disease X as a serious risk to global health security, for which the world needed to prepare. This was two years before humanity faced life-threatening COVID-19.
